State College Field Hockey hosted Mifflin County in the annual Stick It To Cancer game, honoring State College 2019 graduate Sarah Finton in her fight against Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL). The power of positivity and fight was felt throughout the stadium as Chris Finton spoke about his daughter’s journey since being diagnosed, 3 months ago, when a nagging running pain would not go away. The State College Field Hockey team is hosting a Virtual 5K throughout October to raise money to aid Sarah in her battle. The field hockey action began with the Little Lions controlling much of the play. But the Mifflin County defense kept this balanced offense to zero corners and minimal shots in the first half. After the break, State College’s Phebe Herlocher dynamic stickwork sliced through the Huskie defense before centering a pass where Maddy Shomo was waiting to put the ball past Mifflin County’s goalie Sophie McCurdy. This is Shomo’s third goal of the season and first game winning goal. Mifflin County’s Hailee Sheetz had all 6 of her team’s shots on goal. The State College defense led by goalie Molly Schreiner was stalwart. One shot in particular, late in the third, Sheetz broke away from her defense, launching a rocket shot that Schreiner swiftly deflected away. Mifflin County continued to find chances, earning 2 corners with no time on the clock. State College’s stimey defense stayed strong to secure the shutout and win to end the game.

State College moves to 8-2 and 6-1 Mid-Penn Commonwealth division conference play. In the 8 victories, State College has had 7 different game winning goal scorers. (Herlocher 2, Moyer 1, O’Donnell 1, Miller 1, Bartlett 1, Grande 1, Shomo 1).
