LEWISTOWN – Sports is not all about winning or losing but more of the effort given in the heat of battle.

The Mifflin County girls volleyball team welcomed in undefeated rival State College Tuesday night.

Not only was it a 3-game win for the Little Lions but it was a match where Mifflin County can take positive notes out of it as it got better each game.

State College won 25-3, 25-13 and 25-17.

Despite a slow start to things the

In the first game, Mifflin County seemed awe struck in the contest falling 25-3.

“Its all about going in with determination and going in holding each other accountable, going in to play the game, and not being defeated as soon as we step out on the court. I asked the girls what was our biggest downfall in that first set? All of them said, we weren’t pumped up and we weren’t motivated. They had it in their mindset and that was the result,” said Mifflin County coach Krystena Mayo. “Here and there we are starting to pick up things. We are hitting balls we normally wouldn’t. We are starting to capitalize in some situations. Our biggest thing is receiving the ball. That is something we struggle with but we continue to practice. That in the first set was definitely our biggest downfall. But we are starting to pick up on things. We are starting to pick up on our hitters. I saw some improvement and I saw some things that we have been working on in practice. So I’m happy about that. “

Leading the way at the service line was State College’s Kacy Sekunda who opened the game with 17 consecutive service points.

State College’s frontline has it’s A-game going from the very beginning in the 17-0 run.

But in the second game, the Huskies settled in and went to work going toe-to-toe with the Little Lions as they were tied all the way to the 10-10 mark.

In that early run, Mifflin County got service points from Caitlyn Kick(2) and Jade Morningstar(3).

Mifflin County took an 11-10 lead when it forced State College to a side out.

But like most good teams do, the Little Lions has another run in them and we’re able to move ahead on a side out and four service points by Sara Neely.

The two teams would exchange side outs four times before the Little Lions heated up one more time.

Finishing off the contest was Lauren Arnold, who tallied eight consecutive points en route to the 25-13 victory.

However, Mifflin County got strong digs from Kick and strong front row play from McKenna Seese, Kashia Smith and Morningstar.

There was an air of team chemistry started to build from beginning to end in the second contest.

Mifflin County carried that over as they entered game three.

Though the Little Lions took a lead early, the Huskies stayed within striking distance for mostly halfway through the contest.

Picking up service points for Mifflin County in the 25-17 contest were Gianna Hopple (1), Kick (1), Maddie Myers (2) and Morningstar (3).

Mifflin County is back in action Thursday at home against Cedar Cliff.
