Three-in a-row Mifflin County tops McDowell for third straight year, advances to PIAA state playoffs

By Kenny Varner

CRESSON –  Moving on once again!

The MIfflin County softball team was hoping to make it three in a row in as many years as they found themselves in yet another match up with McDowell in the District 6/10 match up Tuesday at Mount Aloysius.

With an explosive offense, big play defense and ace hurler Madison Wolfgang on the mound, the Huskies took home the 10-3 victory.

“We told them tonight you can’t depend on a certain girl every time (for hits). We hit the ball nice. We made some nice plays and we hit the ball hard,” said MIfflin County coach Craig Weston. “We created some of our good luck because we hit the ball hard. It was nice to see up and down the line up.”

Wolfgang took to the circle and faced off against the Trojans Maddy Matlock. Wolfgang finished with 15 strikeouts and scattered five hits in the victory.

“She threw well and hit her spots. We played some good defense behind her,” said Weston.

Leading the way at the plate for MIfflin County were Sophie McCurdy (3-for-4, HR 5 RBIs), Mackenna Yoder (2-for-3), Dakota Hershberger (2-for-4, HR), Arika Henry (2-for-4).

Offensively, the Huskies struck first, plating two in the first.

With one out, Arika Henry blasted a shot that the centerfielder couldn’t get her glove totally on. She moved to third on a Dakota Hershberger rope past shortstop.

Henry scored the first run, tagging up on a MaKenna Yoder Sacrifice fly.

Sophie McCurdy brought in Hershberger with a double of her own that hit the left field wall, upping it to a 2-0 advantage.

Wolfgang took things into her own hands in the second, striking out the side, giving her five in just the two innings.

Things continued to roll for the “Purple and Black attack” in the second.

Again the Huskies had an out and manufactured a run.

Alexis O’Brien walked.

Wolfgang laid down a picture perfect bunt, moving O’Brien over to third.

Wolfgang moved up a base on a steal.

Riley Hine hit a sacrifice fly to Left, scoring O’Brien.

Wolfgang continued her domination over the Trojans, striking out 2-of-3.

McCurdy added two more runs for MIfflin County as she blasted a 2-run home run with Yoder on base.

Jalee Bodtorf kept the inning alive hustling out a triple.

The Trojans ended the shut out in the fourth, notching a run. Hilary Sissem singled and later scored on an RBI double by Gracie Miller.

The runs kept coming for the Lady Huskies in the fifth, plating three more.

Highlighting the at bats was a laser shot by Hershberger on a solo shot.

The Lady Trojans refused to go down without a fight as they played two more runs in the sixth.

From there, Wolfgang shut down the Trojans in the seventh, adding three more to her strikeout count.

Mifflin County will be back in action on June 5th.
