BEA boys finish second at invitational

WINDGATE – It was a very productive day for the Bald Eagle Area boys soccer team Saturday as they played host to its Annual Soccer Invitational.

The Eagles played host to Mifflinburg, Bishop Guilfoyle and friendly rival Bellefonte.

The young team showed its merit as it reached the championship game against a very seasoned Mifflinburg team.

Though the Eagles fell 3-0 to the Wildcats in the championship, it was a strong message to the Eagles head coach Jason Bair, who liked what he saw on the field.

“We are still trying to figure out who we are as a team. Today we took a few steps to grow into a little bit better players,” Bair said. “Mifflinburg is a really tough team to play but to hold them to only three goals as we did, we did well. The guys never gave up, they continue to work hard. I know there were three goals scored but the defense did play well with the amount of pressure that was put on us.”

Mifflinburg showed it had a quick striking offense and did just that in the title tilt.

Ethan Hendricks blasted an unassisted goal at the 36:51 mark to get the game scoring started.

However, the Eagle defense would stiffen and not allow any easy shots at the net.

Time and time again in the first period, the Eagles sent the Wildcats offense back empty handed while its offense made some attempts at the Mifflinburg end as well.

But before the first half would come to an end, the Wildcats found an opening and went for it.

Ethan Mangle got loose and blasted an unassisted goal with 2:11 left, upping it to 2-0.

In the second half, the Eagles tightened their defense even more and was able to allow just one lone goal second to end the scoring and gave the championship to Mifflinburg. Kellen Black finished off the scoring on an unassisted goal with just 9:23 left to ice it.

Mifflinburg led on shots on goal by a 13-6 margin.

They also led in corners 5-3.

Bald Eagle Goalie Conner Robinson tallyed seven saves while Mifflinburg goalkeeper Rylie Maurer finished with four.
