Despite Lay Off MU Beats Claysburg

MOUNT UNION – The Trojans hadn’t played a game in nearly two weeks but it didn’t look like it as they defeated the Bulldogs by the final score of 9-3 in ICC baseball action on Tuesday.
The big story of the game came from the mound as starting pitcher Davin Yocum to the ball for Mount Union. Things didn’t necessarily go smoothly for Yocum at the start of the game as he struggled with hitting the strike zone and had a total of 24 pitches in the opening inning. However, the Trojans were able to get out of the inning with little damage as they only allowed one run in the frame.
Mount Union looked to answer in the bottom half of the inning and respond they did as the Trojans added two runs in the frame with the first being from Landon Chrisemer who grounded out to short that scored Jamon Ranck. Later on in the inning Levi Hunsinger doubled to right center bringing in Cainen Atherton to put them up 2-1.
Then in the bottom half of the second inning, Mount Union struck again bringing in four runs. The Trojans had the bases loaded with two outs before Chrisemer again came to the plate and blasted a bases clearing double to left center to put them up 5-1. Chrisemer later scored on a Dylan Shawver double to make it 6-1.
After his first inning struggles, Yocum started to heat up on the mound and was throwing less pitches each time he went back onto the mound. Yocum had 24 pitches in the first, then 17 in the second, 13 in the third, 10 in the fourth and eight pitches thrown in the fifth for a grand total of 72 pitches for five innings of work with two strikeouts and three walks.
Sadly the same could not be said for Bulldogs’ starter Aidan Simpson who threw 73 pitches in two and two-thirds innings before being pulled for Braden Furry who finished the final two and a third innings.
Mount Union later tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning that helped put the game away.
Mount Union is now (4-1, 2-0) and will travel to face Bald Eagle Area today with a game time of 4:30 p.m. This game was originally on Thursday but due to potential weather problems it was moved to today.
