Lady Huskies lacrosse takes Bellefonte into final minutes before falling by two

BELLEFONTE – It was a second half nail biter Thursday night as the Bellefonte girls lacrosse team and the “up and coming” Lady Huskies  of MIfflin County.

Despite trailing 5-1 at the intermission, the Huskies rallied early in the second cutting the Lady  Raiders lead to 5-4 with 19:32 left.

However, Bellefonte would survive by scoring two goals late while Bellefonte’s goalie Kayle Frantz and her defensive backfield was able to keep MIfflin County to just one goal the rest of the way, winning 7-5 in an instant classic.

The shots on goal were very close with the Red Raiders taking the 17-14 advantage.

Frantz had five saves as did MIfflin County goalie Katie Treaster.

The learning process had taken another positive step for the 1-0 Huskies, coming out of the first half with the intensity and the momentum.

Right off the first possession, Sadie Fike went right at the heart at the goal area and sent a blast home, making it a 5-2 advantage with 21:06 left.

Before the Red Raiders knew what hit them, MIfflin County got back on the scoreboard when Monica Drukenmiller bounced a shot off the turf and into the back of the net, getting MIfflin County one step closer in the scoreboard 5-3.

Less than two minutes later, Fike played an aggressive angle once again and tickled the twine, cutting it to a one-point Red Raider lead.

Things got more tension filled as both teams were searching for much needed goals.

With 18:59 left in the game, the Lady Red Raiders gave themselves a little breathing room when Shea Kelley snuck one past Treaster, upping the lead to 6-4.

But the Huskies refused to go away when Kashia Smith stole the ball down in the Bellefonte goal area and picked it up a put MIfflin County within one once again.

Frantz and her backfield mates came up with crucial stops in the following three Huskies possessions.

The Bellefonte goal area tightened and refused to let any more get through.

With 5:31 left, Bellefonte gave them the extra insurance they would need to keep ahold of the lead, making it a 7-5 advantage.

Defensively, Bellefonte shut down the lanes and battled to gain control of the loose balls.

But that didn’t stop the Huskies from battling to the end as they had the ball right in scoring range as the time ran out in the contest.

In the first half, Bellefonte opened with a 5-1 advantage.

Leigha Schrader led things off with an early goal at 23:13.

MIfflin County tied the contest when Smith hit the nullifier at 17:30, tying it at one.

Two goals by Molly McKee and one by   Mackena Lake sent the Lady Raiders into the half with all the momentum.

Despite the late run by MIfflin County, the game was won by the home team after quite the battle.

Mifflin County hosted a very veteran Bellefonte team Thursday and the final score was 19-1. First game of the season for the Huskies.
