MC matmen post six medalist at King of the Mountain

By BRIAN CARSON

MILL HALL – Mifflin County picked up six medalists and placed sixth in the team standings at the King of the Mountain tournament Saturday night at Central Mountain High School.

Trey Kibe led the Husky contingent winning the 160-pound title with a 4-0 decision over Cole Flanagan of Council Rock South. To get there, he pinned Tony Zona of Penn Trafford in 58 seconds of their quarterfinal match and followed that up with a 13-1 major decision over Anthony Robinson of Williamsport in the semis.

“It’s a great feeling. This is definitely a really good tournament. What works for me is going out there, wrestle as hard as I can and trust in my preparation. I think I work just as hard as any of these kids. I trust in what I have and I execute it,” Kibe said. “He (Flanagan) made my job easy. He just laid there and I rode him out. I would have loved to score more points but I won and that’s all that matters. My confidence level is pretty high. I think I can wrestle with anybody and have a chance to win.”

Nic Allison came in third at 106, Blaine Davis took fourth at 285, Christian Fisher was fifth at 120, Brycen Hassinger placed sixth at 170 and Derek Burk finished seventh at 126.

The balanced wrestling allowed the Huskies to finish in sixth place with 122.5 points, just half a point behind Franklin Regional. Council Rock South won the team title with 198.5 points.

“It was definitely a good tournament. They came to wrestle and that’s what we asked of them. You don’t have a choice here either. You either come to wrestle or you get wrestled,” Mifflin County assistant coach Dale Searer said. “I’m really happy right now with six medalists. This is one of the toughest tournaments in the state and to finish with six medalists and sixth place as a team is awesome. I’m very thrilled. We had eight here on day two and six medaled and to finish sixth out of 32 teams is something the whole staff is proud of.”

Allison shook off a tough semifinal loss to eventual champion Carter Dibert of Franklin Regional to come back and claim third place with a 3-2 victory over Brookville’s Owen Reinsel, who he beat earlier in the day in the quarterfinals.

Davis came up short in his fifth-place match with R.J. Wildrick of Wyalusing but still finished the tournament with a 4-2 record.

Fisher picked up his third medal at King of the Mountian beating Ben Monn of Cumberland Valley by a 5-4 score for fifth. The Husky senior earned a medal despite battling injuries and illness.

After going 0-2 last year, Hassinger continued his solid season coming up short to Austin Mele of Burrell 3-1 in overtime of their fifth-place match.

Burk brought home his second medal at KOM with a 6-4 victory over Alex Kightlinger of Saegertown for seventh.

Ethan Kauffman (132) and Kyler Everly (138) made it to the second day of action but came up one victory short of earning a medal.
