Mechanicsburg prevails over State College in Title IX Celebration game.

Friday afternoon on the Penn State Turf after a ceremony celebrating the 50-year anniversary of the passage of Title IX a hard-fought field hockey game between State College and Mechanicsburg occurred. Mechanicsburg prevailed after three lead changes by a 4-3 score.  State College started the game on fire scoring two goals in a less than 2-1/2 minute span. Ella Tambroni scored the first goal at 10:50 and Maddy Shomo scored at 9:27 in Period 1, with Joelle Bartlett credited with assists for both.  Four minutes later, Mechanicsburg’s Natalie Wilson scored on a corner with an assist by Cam Standish. Mechanicsburg kept the pressure on, tying the game with another penalty corner at 8:13 in the second period by Gracyn Catalano with another assist by Standish. Cam Standish then scored an unassisted goal at 3:36 in Period 2; sending Mechanicsburg into halftime break with a 3-2 lead.

The game was not near over, as Ella Tambroni scored at 3:35 in the third during State College’s lone penalty corner with a loft into the upper right post off a Hannah Garlin assist. Mechanicsburg earned a stroke late in the fourth, with the Lions goalie, Molly Schreiner standing tall in goal. The score remained netted at 3-3. Less then 2 minutes later, the Wilcats took the lead for good with an unassisted Grace Catalano goal at 9:58 in the final period. State College’s Molly Schreiner had a strong performance, with 14 saves and thwarted 9 penalty corners and a penalty stroke.

Next game State College takes on Greenwood for the Annual Stick It to Cancer Game, at Memorial Field, State College, Monday October 10, JV 5:00 PM, Varsity 6:30 PM.
