Pitchers duel! Bald Eagle outlasts Muncy to play on in PIAAs

By Kenny Varner

WINGATE – Off and running!

The Bald Eagle softball team hosted the first round of PIAA playoffs Monday as they played host to the Muncy Indians.

The difference in the contest would come in the bottom of the first as the Lady Eagles played one and held on the next six innings to take home the victory and stroll to a second round contest on Thursday, winning 1-0.

“They played very well defensively,” said Bald Eagle coach Don Lucas.

Bald Eagle ace hurler Sierra Albright started for the Eagles as she faced Muncy’s Nola Moyer.

Both had strong outings, Albright scattered just four hits in the game while striking out seven. Her defense was behind her 100-percent, especially behind the plate as catcher Kailey Eckert. Eckert ended the game as she gunned down a Muncy runner to end the contest and clinching another game for her team.

Both had their A-game going in the match up.

Moyer was just as impressive, allowing only two hits in the game, both by Shae Housel. The Indians’ hurler struck out 14 as she kept her team within striking distance throughout.

“She’s (Moyer) is a heck of a pitcher. She’s the first lefty we’ve seen but I’m not going to make exercises,” said Lucas. “She handcuffed us. She did what she had to do. We can’t simulate someone like that in practice. All in all, a wins a win. We’re not going to complain on how we won. We’re going to work on some of the things that need worked on.”

Muncy opened the contest with the bases loaded. But Albright and company shut things down refusing to give up a run.

Offensively, the Lady Eagles struck first in the first.

With two out, Sydney Thompson got things started with a walk.

The Indians intentionally walked Ava Stere.

Shae Housel made Muncy regret their decisions as she punched an RBI single into right center, scoring Thompson from second.

Defense took center stage the rest of the way as neither team were able to push another run through.

The Bald Eagle defense especially was stingy as it came up with clutch play after clutch play.

Bald Eagle will be back in action Thursday at a time and location to be announced at a later date.
