PO evens season series win Bellefonte; ends Red Raiders’ win streak

PHILIPSBURG – This one had nailbiter written all over it!

Two teams that have been blazing through the Mountain League this season met Monday.

Bellefonte has been a 14-game winning streak, it’s only loss coming into the contest was a opening day loss to Williamsport.

Philipsburg-Osceola came in with a record of 9-4 and a 9-1 record in the Mountain League.

Early on in the season, Bellefonte took a 3-2 victory over the Mounties.

When the two mat Monday, Philipsburg-Osceola evened the season series and put them tied at the top of the Mountain League with the 4-3 victory.

On a night the team honored it seniors, the Mounties also made a strong statement on the diamond as well.

Philipsburg-Osceola was able to make their two hits count. Jake DeSimone and Jeremy Whitehead finished with the two hits. Whitehead scored a run and an RBI on the night. DeSimone scored twice on the afternoon.

Dave Meersand notched the win for the Mounties, going the distance scattering five hits, three earned runs and eight strikeouts.

Bellefonte was led by a home run and two RBIs by Levi Purnell. Also picking up hits for Bellefonte were Braedyn Kormanic, Alex Ebeling, Josh Brown and Peyton Vancas.

Dominic Caperella took the loss after coming in in relief of Derek Fravel.

Philipsburg-Osceola started the game scoring, posting a run in the second.

Nick Coudriet reached on an error.

She later scored on a RBI fielder’s choice by Ben Gutskey, making it a 1-0 advantage.

Bellefonte tied the contest in the third.

Vancas led off the third with a single to left.

Fravel moves Vancas up a base as he took one for the team, being hit by a pitch.

A miscue by the Mounties allows Vancas to score, making it a 1-1 contest.

Gustkey scores again in the fourth, upping the score to a 2-1 advantage.

PO adds to the lead, this time the Mounties added two more in the fifth.

Bellefonte gets a late 2-run home run by Purnell, but that would be all the Red Raiders could get as the Mounties end the Bellefonte winning streak.
