PV girls “Press” the issue with Central

By Kenny Varner

SPRING MILLS – The Central girls basketball team had a “pressing ” issue Friday in their game Penns Valley.

Their issue in fact was the full court press the Lady Rams used early and often forcing the Dragons to numerous turnovers in their 55-49 victory over Central.

Leah Beben posted a double-double as she finished as high scorer with 15 points and 13 rebounds.

Avery Dinges second high scorer with 11 points, four of which came in the final minutes to help put the game out of reach. She also was active on the boards as she pulled down eight rebounds, just missing a double- double.

Kailen Winkelblech third high scorer with 10 points. Her clutch triple with 4:35 left, stopped the Dragon’s momentum and gave it back to the Lady Rams.

Kaitlyn Romig had a strong night rebounding as well, finishing with 10 boards and six points.

“We came off that energy from Wednesday when we beat Huntingdon. We kept up the energy. Our press didn’t work as well as it did before but we adjusted when we needed to. When we had to come back to it it worked well again,” said Penns Valley coach Terrance Green. “That’s two games where we finished in game situations that they were able to finish the game. Again, that’s great for us going into the rest of the season.”

Penns Valley finished with 57 boards while Central tallied 35.

In the final stanza, the Lady Rams went back to the press that worked well in the first half.

Early on in the quarter Central opened with a 3-0 run, closing it to a 45-41.

With the Lady Dragons making a run, Penns Valley sharpshooter Winkleblech stepped behind the 3-point line and hit nothing but net to up the lead back to seven.

Despite the Dragons putting its pressure on the Rams front court, Dinges was cool under pressure finishing out the team’s scoring in and holding off Central the rest of the way.

Starting the game off with its stifling defensive press, the defense helped push its offense to score in different ways as they led the Dragons 19-9 after the first period.

Beben led the way with six.

But in the second, the Lady Dragons battled back as it was able to break through the zone to pick up some shots in the lane.

Going into the intermission, the Lady Rams held onto a 29-25 lead.

In the third, Penns Valley settled back in a tight defense, temporarily taking a break from the press.

That change also helped extend their lead as they outscored Central 16-13, giving Penns Valley a 45-38 advantage with only eight minutes to go.

Penns Valley’s Overall Record is 4-4 overall and a Mountain League Record of 4-1.

Next Game: Monday, February 8th at Clearfield. JV at 6 and Varsity at 7:30.
