By Kenny Varner

SPRING MILLS – Coming into Friday’s game against Midd-West, the Penns Valley Rams football team looked to continue its high-flying offensive performance and it averaging of over 40 points per game with quarterback Aaron Tobias tearing up the opponents secondary as well as running back Logan Snyder who was one of Tobias favorite target.

Midd-West, who is in just their second year as a variety squad was looking to pull a David to Penns Valley’s Goliath.

In the end, the Rams continued its red hot scoring pace, out scoring the Mustangs 55-7 in a Non-League contest in Penns Valley’s own backyard.

Despite a cool crisp evening, the Rams were red hot on the field.

Tobias, who had eight touchdown passes on the day, again lit things up as he went a white-hot 15-of-21 for 397 yards and five touchdowns in the first half alone. He finished with 513 yards through the air.

Teammate Austin Fisher finished with 137 yards receiving and three touchdowns.

“I think we came out and executed what they were giving us. We were executing the plays we set up and practiced this week,” said Penns Valley coach Martin Tobias. “This game was a lot closer than the score indicated. We got up on them.m and things kind of steamrolled. But on that kickoff for a touchdown, they were right back in it. Fortunately, we answered with a big play. I think answering the call was the challenge they were giving us. I think the fourth down stance our defense had early in the game really helped to set the tone also.”

Teammate Stephen Ripka had 140 yards receiving to pace the Rams.

Midd-West was led by quarterback Oakley Bennett who passed for 51 yards and Hunter Wolfley who had 24-yards rushing to go with his 80-yard Kick-off return for a touchdown.

Tobias though completed passes to seven different receivers en route to the 35-7 lead at the intermission.

The Rams ran it only five times in the half for 21 yards, giving them a total yardage amount of 418.

The lone highlight for the Mustangs was a Hunter Wolfley 80-yard kick off return in the second period.

Defensively, John Aston finished with two quarterback sacks.

Midd-West moves the ball at times but couldn’t get it into the end zone in the first half.

Quarterback Oakley Bennett passed for 47 first half yards.

His running game rushed for 72 yards on 24 rushes.

“We challenged them again at halftime to come out and compete. said Midd-West coach Brad Hatter. “Penns Valley’s a good football team and has some good players over there. We just weren’t able to match their intensity. That falls on my shoulders to get our guys ready to play.”

Midd-West started strong as it started a drive on its own 40.

Wolfley helped get the ball down  the field to the Rams 21.

However, the Penns Valley defense held Wolfley on a 4th down, giving the ball back to the Rams.

On homecoming night, Penns Valley gave its fans a night to remember.

On the Rams second possession of the ball, Tobias found Austin Fisher on the third play from scrimmage, hooking up on a 10-yard TD completion.

Penns Valley defense held on the Mustangs next possession and the offense went right back to work.

Tobias again marched his team downfield and scored on the third play from scrimmage.

Like in the first scoring drive, Tobias found Fisher again, this time for a 45-yard touchdown pass, giving the home team a 14-0 advantage after one quarter of play.

Beginning the second quarter, Tobias was at it again with a familiar face in Fisher once again. This time the two hooked up for a 47-yarder for the score, upping the lead to 21-0 with 8:03 still to go in the half.

On the following kick off Wolfley broke free out around the right corner and went all the way for the 80-yard touchdown run, cutting it to 21-7.

But it took just two plays from scrimmage for the Rams to go back up by 21.

Tobias found Stephen Ripka for the first time on a 80-yard TD snag, upping it to 28-7.

Penns Valley added one more touchdown before the end of the half.

Again, Tobias went to the air, this time to Seth Baney. Baney blazed his way downfield for a 29-yard touchdown run, giving the Rams a 35-7 led at the intermission.

Despite the Mustangs battling to the very end, Penns Valley also took care of the second half posting 20 more points in the second to put the game in the win column.

Penns Valley battled Bellefonte on the road next week while Midd-West travels to Nativity.
