Reed: Coverage of Penn State Football Media Day

UNIVERSITY PARK – Ready to roll.

It all began at the Clemens Family Football Team Complex Sunday where the Penn State coaches and players spoke to the Media.

Head coach James Franklin spoke to the media first expressing how well the off season went.

Franklin believes the players have gotten bigger, stronger and faster, stating the last three practices went really well.

When asked about the quarterback situation Franklin said confidence is riding high with two of the potential starters.

“Drew Allar and Beau Pribula look good and are playing like year two guys with a lot of confidence, said Franklin. “Both quarterbacks have improved and have become more physical and stronger.”

Franklin added that Jaxon Smolik has been a big surprise as is continuing to learn.

The veteran coach stated the depth in every position is impressive.

There’s competition at each position That will have an impact during the season.

Special teams coordinator Stacy Collins also showed the same upbeat intensity as Franklin.

“We are excited about what we are doing lots of depth and competition young and the experienced guys are improving,” said Collins.

Collins added that himself and the coaching staff believe consistency is key.

Defensive Coordinator Manny Diaz had lots to say about his defense

“ We Have lots of guys that can cause Havoc. We have the same goal as the offense lead in wins on the defensive side,” said Diaz. “We need to play with our strengths put our guys in the best position on third downs and to be successful everyone is unique.”

Diaz Referred to what Franklin says all the time, play complimentary football.

Quarterbacks coach Mike Yurcich said the competition has been an exciting one so far this season.

“Our Quarterbacks want to compete. They are growing and are fierce competitions,” said Yurcich. “They support each other in every aspect of understanding the offense. Yurcich added “Its not one thing, it’s  overall development in physical and mental standpoint. Production must be good.We will need each and every guy.”
