Bald Eagle takes care of buisness against Bearcats, win 11-1

By Kenny Varner

WINGATE – Going into its last game of the week, the Bald Eagle baseball team wasted little time starting their weekend as they topped Mountain League opponent Huntingdon 11-1 in a five-inning affair.

Picking up the 2-hit victory was hurler Wyatt McClain.

McClain took a no-hit bud into the fourth before the Bearcats Josh Brysa singled to spoil the Eagles’ excitement.

However, Brysa took the loss as he was the starting pitcher for Huntingdon.

It was a 7-run second inning that sparked the Eagles as it then pounded out two runs in the fourth and fifth innings to end the contest via the 10-run rule.

“That was big for us. I think we got all those runs with two outs. That was big. We got some things going there and got some clutch hits,” said Bald Eagle Area coach Jim Gardner. “It’s always nice to play with the lead. It relaxes the tension abd lets the pitcher go to work out there and have fun with it. Once again today, Wyatt McClain did a great job for us.”

After a scoreless first inning by both teams, Bald Eagle went into the bottom of the second and made a statement offensively.

Heverly got the inning started blasting a ground rule double into left field.

With two outs, Kahale Burns kept the inning going as he walked to put the Eagles back to the top of the line up.

Myles Stover reached base on a chopper to shortstop that handcuffed him allowing all runners to move up a base and Heverly to score the game’s first run.

Alex Gavlock took one for the team as he was hit by a Brysa offering to load the bases for designated hitter Noah Williamson.

Williamson did not disappoint as he slammed a rocket shot into centerfield, clearing everyone off the base paths but himself, upping the score to 4-0.

Catcher Kyler Cunningham ripped a shot down the line scoring Williamson from second and giving him the RBI. Cunningham was replaced by courtesy runner Trey Foster.

Hayden Vaughn joined Foster on base as he reached on an error by the shortstop, keeping the inning alive.

Like he did to start off the second, Heverly blasted another double, this time picking up two RBIs in the process, giving his team a comfortable 7-0 advantage.

Bald Eagle shortstop Burns had a strong day on defense, highlighted by robbing a Bearcat runner of a hit as he jumped up and snagged a rocket shot heading to go into left centerfield.

Mix that with McClain’s performance and you have a shut out going into the fourth inning.

With one swing of Brysa’s bat, the perfect game and no-hit bid was over.

Brysa would later score on a miscue by Bald Eagle, ending the shut out.

In the fourth, Bald Eagle edged closer to ending the contest as Gavlock and Williamson both scored, upping the lead to 9-1.

After once again keeping the Bearcats bats at bay, the Eagles put the game away, posting the two runs they needed to put the game on ice, winning 11-1.

Bald Eagle is off until Monday as it hosts Philipsburg-Osceola in the last home regular season contest of the year.
