Bald Eagle wins nail biting 2-1 win over Raiders

By Kenny Varner

WINGATE -Another epic battle!

Early in the season two rivals met up and both played a back and forth battle when Bald Eagle and Bellefonte met on the girls soccer field.

In the end, the Lady Eagles came out on top of a 2-1 thriller.

The game got off to a quick start as the Lady Eagles found the back of the net when Abby Hoover hit a goal with 39:08 left in the first, giving Bald Eagle Area a 1-0 advantage.

Bellefonte was able to get its first shot on the goal, four minutes later.

However, it was stopped by Bald Eagle goalie MacKenzie Vozniak. Vozniak had two saves on the night. The back-third of the Eagles were able to keep the Raiders at bay for most of the contest.

“What a great first game of the season! I saw a lot that I liked and there are some things we can improve on. We constantly preach crashing the net and it paid off tonight with a couple of goals,” said Bald Eagle Area coach Jared Moore said. “Abby Hoover was fantastic tonight. I thought she controlled the midfield and never ran out of energy. She definitely lifted us today.”

Even when Kerri Shutka broke loose for a breakaway attempt, she was stopped by the speed of Lady Eagles defenseman Jordan Franks.

In the first half each team had its chances.

But it would be Bald Eagle that would notch the second goal of the game when Heather Leskovansky slid a pass to Adrienne Hacker. Hacker sent a shot that hit nothing but net, upping the lead to 2-0.

Bald Eagle also took the lead in the shot department in the first half by a 9-3 margin. The Eagles also led in corner opportunities by a 3-0 deficit.

Going into the intermission, the Eagles held a 2-0 advantage.

But it would be the Lady Raiders that would come out in the second half with a mission.

It would be a quick score that would put the game into a nail biter.

Sara Proctor broke away from the defenseman and got a wide open blast to cut the lead to 2-1 with 38:17 left.

With the goal, you could cut the tension with a knife as both teams went back-and-forth as each team tried to find a break in the others defense.

As the clock ticked down to 18:38, Bellefonte was called with a yellow card which led to a Bald Eagle penalty kick.

However, Bellefonte replacement goalie Emily Kulp stopped the Bald Eagle penalty attempt, keeping the game within one.

Despite their best efforts, the Raiders weren’t able to crack the back-third’s defense as Bald Eagle went on to the 2-1 victory.
