Bellefonte defense comes up huge in notching first victory

BELLEFONTE – Adding another exciting page to their story.

Despite the records, the Bellefonte and Philipsburg -Osceola football teams battled to the bitter end Friday night in ‘The Battle for the Luther Trophy’.

The Red Raiders were able to hold on to a nail biting 9-8 victory, giving Bellefonte its first win of the season.

However, it would Philipsburg-Osceola that got on the scoreboard first when the defense helped get the team points by sacking Bellefonte quarterback Trevor Johnson in his own end zone for the saftey and the two-point lead.

Later in the second quarter, Bellefonte’s offense was able to work their down the field.

With the ball on the Mountie eight, Johnson called his own number and blazed in from eight yards out for the touchdown. The point after was unsuccessful, making it a 6-2 ball game.

Later in the quarter, the Red Raiders were able to work the ball downfield once again.

But the Mounties were able to force a fourth down with it at the Mounties 14.

Facing the fourth down, the Red Raiders went for the field goal and kicker Logan Proctor connected, upping the Bellefonte lead to 9-2.

From there, both defenses were able to keep the other’s offense in check until the final stanza.

The Mounties refused to go down without a fight as the mounted a late fourth quarter drive.

The Philipsburg-Osceola worked the ball down scored on a 30-Yd pass completion for a TD, cutting the game to a 9-8 contest.

Philipsburg-Osceola got the ball back and faced a 4th down with a little over 2 minutes to go with the ball sitting on Bellefonte’s 22-yard line.

The Red Raiders defense cracked the line of scrimmage and was able to block the field goal preserving the victory.
