Bellefonte notch walk off win over Bison

BELLEFONTE – A flair for the dramatic.
Despite trailing for much of their contest on Friday afternoon against Clearfield, the Bellefonte baseball team rallied from a3-run deficit in the seventh and ended things in walk off fashion pulling off the 9-8 victory.
If you were a Red Raiders fan, this game was not for the faint of heart.
However, it was one for the long ball as Bellefonte got home runs from Bobby Marsh, Daniel Catchmark, and CJ Funk.
The Raiders got multiple hits from Cade Fortney 3-for-4 run, Funk 2-for-4 HR, 2runs, 3RBIs and Catchmark 2-for-4 HR, run, 2RBI.
Freshman hurler Seth Shuey added another win to ever growing resume as he came in relief from starter Adam Armstrong.
Armstrong finished with six strike outs before the Bison offense started to get to him.
“When we are attacking the ball like we should we make things happen. Combine that when we’re not making, what I call base running gaffs, we got that base running gaff that we are killing some of our rallies and make some of the big hits not quite as big. But until we fix that, there might be some nail biters,” Bellefonte coach Jon Clark said. “I liked the way the team fought back. We didn’t lose any confidence. They were behind the guys from the get-go. It’s a good win. It’s a learning situation. You hope your never in that situation but it’s nice to see if you get in that situation, the guys know how to perform.”
Going into the seventh inning, the Bison had the momentum, leading 7-5.
With Shuey on the mound, he gave up one bad pitch in the inning and that was to lead off hitter Seth Bumbarger. Bumbarger made the best of it as he sent it over the left field fence for his team’s only home run in the game.
But Shuey would rebound quickly, striking out the side from there and allowing his offense a chance to pull to a tie or win the game.
Dillon Dietrich led things off with a double to centerfield.
Teammate Cade Fortney bounced a rocket down third baseline as the ball sky rocketed over the Bison third baseman, putting runners on first and second.
Funk loaded the bases on a single.
Eric Pegg’s single brought the Red Raiders as step closer, scoring Dietrich.
Colton Burd’s fielders choice was enough to score Fortney and close the Red Raiders deficit to 8-7.
Marsh sent a hard hit grounder to second base that was mishandled by Clearfield’s second baseman, helping Bellefonte to eventually load the bases and tied it as Funk scored, knotting it eight.
After an intentional walk to CJ Lauck to load the bases, it would be Catchmark to answer the call.
Answer it he did, placing a single into left, scoring Burd and cleared the Red Raider bench in the process to let the celebration begin.
Early on, the Bison made their way on the scoreboard first posting two in the second.
But Bellefonte cut the lead in half as they played one.
With two outs, Dietrich walked and advanced to third on a single by Fortney.
Dietrich scores thanks to Clearfield’s first miscue of the game.
Clearfield brought two more home in the top of the third, taking a 4-1 advantage going into the bottom of the third.
Bellefonte brought the long ball into the game that inning as Bobby Marsh smashed a two-run home run and a solo shot Catchmark, tying things at four.
Adding three more in the fifth, Clearfield took back the lead at 7-4Funk sent the game into the last inning trailing only by two as he posted a solo home run of his own.
That would set all the dramatics that happened in the seventh.
Bellefonte is back in action as they battle State College Saturday at Medlar field.
