Carson: Rundown of this year’s Husky Duals

HIGHLAND PARK – State College opened the season as the defending District 6 Class 3A dual meet champions and ranked ninth in the state in the preseason.

The Little Lions didn’t disappoint despite the high expectations, cruising to victories over Lower Dauphin and Mifflin County.

Thanks to COVID-19 and some injuries, Mifflin County was without Trey Kibe, Hunter Johnson, Blake Aumiller, and Parker Kearns. The freshmen couldn’t take part because Mifflin County Junior High closed because of the virus.

The results were obvious.

The Huskies dropped a 47-15 decision to their District 6 rival in a season-opening tri-meet on Saturday at the Husky Gymnasium. Mifflin County kicked things off with a 44-18 win over Lower Dauphin, going 1-1 on the day. The match with State College was a Mid-Penn Commonwealth tussle.

State High crushed the Falcons in their first match by a 67-6 score.

“We got a victory getting to this point that we were able to wrestle today. I couldn’t be happier with that being the case,” Mifflin County coach Kirby Martin said. “Overall, I’m happy with how we wrestled today. We only practiced for two weeks. We knew there would be some gaps in fitness and technique. I’m thankful to wrestle a team like State College to get our feet wet. We have a lot of work to do, but it was good to wrestle today.”

Veterans Nic Allison (113), Kyler Everly (152), and Anson Wagner (160) went 2-0 on the day.

Allison, ranked third in the state, had little time on the mat – decking Jorge Borgos of Lower Dauphin in 1:16, and State College’s Thomas Hill in 32 seconds.

Everly, ranked 11th by PA Power Wrestling, also collected two falls. The Husky junior pinned Lower Dauphin’s Marshall Stahl in 44 seconds and Carter Weaverling of State College in 1:32 with a picture-perfect three-quarters nelson.

Wagner, ranked 20th, disposed of Blake O’Brien of Lower Dauphin in 57 seconds and then eked out a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Braden Newby of State College.

After two scoreless periods, Wagner chose down and hit the match-winning reversal with just eight clicks left in regulation.

After Wagner opened the dual with the Husky win, State College (2-0) went on a five-match run for the commanding 27-3 advantage and never looked back.

Lance Urbas (172), Harrison Schoen (285), and Madeline Baney (106) won by forfeit, while Ty Price beat Trey Shoemaker 11-7 at 189, and freshman Nick Pavlechko scored a late fall in 5:06 over Jaxson Pupo at 215.

Allison stopped the bleeding temporarily with his pin to make it 27-9, but it was all for naught. The ninth-ranked Little Lions won four straight to seal the deal picking up a fall (Pierson Manville at 138), a technical fall (Owen Woolcott at 132), a forfeit (Bailey Weaverling at 126), and a decision (Kyle Martin at 145).

State College held a 12-3 takedown advantage.

The Little Lions won 12 of 13 bouts against Lower Dauphin, scoring bonus point in ten of those. Picking up falls were Martin, Carter Weaverling at 152, Newby, Ty Price at 189, Pavlechko, Schoen, and ninth-ranked Manville. State ranked Owen Woolcott won by a major decision, Eric Weaver won by decision at 132, while Urbas, Hill, and Bailey Weaverling won by forfeit.

Mifflin County won eight bouts against the Falcons, scoring bonus points in all eight matches.

Everly, Wagner, Shoemaker, and Pupo got the Huskies rolling with four falls for the 24-0 lead.

Back-to-back forfeits for Lower Dauphin cut the lead to 24-12. Mifflin County captured four of the last five bouts to salt away the victory.

Allison won by fall, Deakon Schaeffer scored a 10-2 major over Griffin Barilla at 132, Lucas Sheetz scored the pin over Joey Swartz in 2:38 at 138, and Jacob Cunningham closed things out with a 15-4 major decision over Alec Merry at 145.

Mifflin County won the takedown battle over Lower Dauphin 18-1.

The Huskies travel to Chambersburg and State College goes to Central Dauphin for Mid-Penn Conference matches on Thursday.
