MC field hockey hangs tough against Veteran-laden Cedar Cliff

LEWISTOWN – It was a battle of the undefeated Monday night at Mifflin County high school when the young Lady Huskies went head-to-head against a very veteran-laden Cedar Cliff field hockey team.

“Part of it we came out flat in the first half. Cedar Cliff is a great team. They are great passers, very aggressive to the ball,” said Mifflin County coach Ashley Suydam. “We came out flat and then at halftime we were able to adjustments and we definitely did a lot better.”

The Colts got the better of the Huskies on this day, posting 3-first half goals en route to the 3-0 shut out.

However, both teams final stats were eerily similar. Both had seven shots on goal. The two also finished with five corner shots apiece.

Mifflin County goalie Coletta Beeler had four saves.

Leading the way was Natalie Rucuskit who notched the first and last goal on the day for the Colts.

In the first, after a back-and-forth start Cedar Cliff got the game started when Rucuskit thanks to an assist by Irene Zovosky with 25:47 left.

Mifflin County had its chances as it took it down into the Colts back-third numerous times but came back empty.

Cedar Cliff made it 2-0 when Camille Cook smacked it home off an assist from Julia Breneman at 16:20.

The Colts rounded out the firs half scoring as Rucuskit scored on an unassisted goal at 9:20.

The good news for Mifflin County was how the defense solidified and held the Colts scoreless in the half while its offense was a touch away numerous times from posting a score.

As the game went on, there was a sense of maturation taking place with the Lady Huskies as they walked off the field despite the 3-0 defeat.
