Peters tosses 1-hit shut out; Bald Eagle wins 6-0

By Kenny Varner

WINGATE – Team unity makes all the difference when it comes to having a successful team.

Tuesday that was proven to be a fact as the Bald Eagle softball team played a near perfect game against a once-beaten Tyrone team.

Eagles’ hurler Maddie Peters was stellar on the mound, allowing just one hit and struck out 12 in the 6-0 shut out of the Golden Eagles.

Defensively, the Bald Eagles only committed one miscue while its offense roped eight hits in the win.

“They (Tyrone) are a good team. Coming into the game it made me a little nervous because they have a great pitcher. She mixes speeds real well and she keeps you off balanced,” Bald Eagle coach Don Lucas said. “I thought we did a good job hitting the ball. Defensively, I think for a young team we are playing much more mature than are age is. So, I couldn’t be happier with this group of girls right now.”

It was quite the pitchers duel early as Tyrone’s Cate Baran And Bald Eagles’ Maddie Peters stymied the others offense for most of the early innings until Bald Eagles’ offense plated four in the fifth to send Baran out of the game.

However, Baran had six strike outs in the four and 1/3 innings pitched.

But Bald Eagle wastes little time taking the lead in the contest.

Lead off hitter McKenna Baney, who was a perfect 3-for-3 on the night, singled into shallow center to start the first inning off on the right foot. Baney took second on a wild pitch She moved up to third when Mara Hockenberry grounded into a fielder’s choice.

Baney scored on grounder by Maegan King that was bobbled by the shortstop, making it 1-0.

Both pitchers took over in the second as both teams were scoreless.

In the third, Baney was at it again when she slapped a single down third base line for a single. Baney then stole second, putting her in scoring position once again. She then stole third and scored when the throw to third went into left field, making it 2-0.

Peters was still keeping the Tyrone bats at bay in the third, fourth and fifth.

Bald Eagle broke the game open in the fifth as they rallied for four runs on five hits in the inning.

Kayleigh Kinley got the inning started with a double that went deep into left field. She also stole third.

Baney again was automatic at the plate as she singled on a dibbler to the catcher that she reached with no throw by the catcher.

Hockenberry scores both on a single into left center, making it a 4-0 game.

King, who went 2-for-3, followed with double and an RBI as Hockenberry hustled home.

King ended the scoring as she crossed the plate after being singled in by pinch hitter Madison Fisher.

With a big scoring cushion, Peters went right back to work.

Going into the sixth, Peters had a no-bitter going.

After striking out the first two batters, Peters had to face lead off hitter Winny Grut.

With two strikes, Grut hit one into the wind and it turned out to be a seeing-eye single as the ball dropped into shallow centerfield, in between the shortstop, centerfielder and second baseman.

Despite the no-hitter bid foiled, Peters regain composure and struck  out batter number 11 in the game.

After a quick bottom of the sixth, Peters ended the game as she forced two fly outs and a strike outs, giving her team the win.

The Eagles will be back in action on Friday as they battle rival Bellefonte.
