Spikes fall in sSunday showdown with Mahoning

UNIVERSITY PARK – The State College Spikes wrapped up a three-game series against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park Sunday.

State College came into this game trying to sweep the Scrappers. The bats came alive for Mahoning valley early jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning.

The Spikes struggled early and often on the mound using eight pitchers tonight resulting in a 9-7 defeat to the Scrappers.

The first runs of the game for the Spikes came from the opening inning.

Baseman Tyler Wilson smoked a line drive to the outfield while Mahoning Valley’s Oliver Service would get charged with the error resulting in two runners scoring on the play. State College would mount a comeback with big time at bats with Spikes stars Addison Smith tripling to drive in two more runs.

Luke Napleton would Follow up the triple with a line drive single to the outfield Bringing home Smith to cut the deficit down two a point game.

Mahoning Valley Had success early on the Mound With Cale Lansville Pitching four solid innings giving up one hit walking a batter while Striking a batter out Looking The only batter Lansville struck out was Cade Climie sending him down looking in the home half of the third inning. The walk total was high today for State College walking 13 batters While the Spikes only struck out five hitters while facing Mahoning Valley tonight.

State College was limited to only 34 at bats on the night in the loss to The Scrappers. Meanwhile, Mahoning Valley only had 31 at bats tonight.

Late In the game Michigan Product, Ryan Zimmer, struggled late in the game coming in from relief only going two thirds of a inning giving up two runs while walking four Batters

That would prove to be costly as the Spikes blow another opportunity of having a legit chance on coming back to sweep the Scrappers but Mahoning Valley would not be denied as the Scrappers salvaged one game.

Both teams will have a scheduled day off Tomorrow the State College Spikes will start a six-game road trip on Tuesday State college won’t return  home until July 3rd against Williamsport.
