State Volleyball keeps things close against CV but falls in three

STATE COLLEGE – They never gave up.

The State College boys volleyball team hosted another state ranked opponent in Cumberland Valley Monday on its senior night.

Despite falling 3-0 to the Eagles, the Little Lions let Cumberland Valley know they weren’t going to go down without a fight.

The Eagles won by scores of 25-18, 26-24 and 25-17.

Before the game, the Little Lions honored Danny Karpenko, John Mizerock, Jackson Edwards, Jake Jeffries, Aaron Brucker, Alex Marshall and Jarod Leynes.

After dropping the first set, State was determined to make a statement as it pushed Cumberland Valley to the limit before falling 26-24.

The game was close from the very beginning

In total the game had 36 side outs as both teams refused to give an inch to the other.

State tied the game at 17 and the game would remain close until the very end.

Cumberland Valley had two service points the rest of the way en route to holding on to the victory.

In the first contest, Cumberland Valley started out with a 3-0 advantage.

State rallied back after forcing a side out and then an ace by Brayden Kuruzovich, cutting it to a 3-2 deficit.

Back battled the Eagles as they scored three consecutive points to up the lead to four.

Cumberland Valley was led by the front row power of Jared Johnson.

Johnson would be deadly from the outside front position as he was constantly spiking the ball into the Lions mid court.

But State College had a strong front row performances.

Cumberland Valley would add to its lead, taking an 11-6 advantage.

State College ended the run as Jackson Edwards smoked a blast over the net and into an empty back corner.

Cumberland Valley started to sizzle as it went on yet another run led by three spikes by Johnson, upping the lead to an 19-8 lead.

With posting a side out, State College made a run of its own as Kuruzovich rolled off three consecutive service points, cutting it to a 19-12 score.

However, the lead was to much for the young State College team as they fell 25-18.

In the final game, Cumberland Valley exploded out to a 8-0 lead before the Little Lions came battling back to make it a 25-17 contest.

Kuruzovich finished with 10 assists, two aces, four digs and a kill.
