Lady Eagles, Peters soar past Huntingdon

By Kenny Varner

MILESBURG – Sporting a busy schedule this week, the Bald Eagle Area softball team opened its week in grand fashion defeating a young Huntingdon team Monday at home, 10-0 in a 6-inning affair.

Bald Eagle hurler Maddison Peters was again an anchor of stability for her team as she scattered three hits and struck out eight. She didn’t allow a Bearcat runner past second base the entire contest.

“She’s steady. Anytime you get her out there and you can score some runs, we feel pretty good. She is always steady. She never gets too high or too low. She doesn’t get rattled and that’s always a sign of a great pitcher, said Bald Eagle head coach Don Lucas. “We also had some timely hitting tonight.”

In the first inning, Bald Eagle got on the board early as they plated four in the first.

Mara Hockenberry opened with a liner at the pitcher, giving her an infield hit.

She moved up on a fielder’s choice by McKena Baney. Hockenberry moved up to third as she notched a stolen base.

Ava Stere followed with a walk

Both Baney and Hockenberry moved up a base on a Huntingdon wild pitch, making it a 1-0 contest.

Katelyn Smitchko doubled in Baney with a smoking grounder down the third baseline.

With two out, Madelyn King also doubled to bring in Smitchko. King roped a blast to centerfield.

Autumn Tobias followed in King’s footsteps as she followed up with an RBI double to right field.

After shutting down the Bearcats in the second, Bald Eagle added a run.

Hockenberry layed down a picture perfect bunt to start off the inning.

She proceeded to steal second and third.

She then scored on anRBI fielder’s choice by Baney.

Both defenses took over in the third and the fourth.

But in the fifth, the Lady Eagles scored again.

Smitchko blasted her second double of the game.

Her time on base was a short one as Peters blasted the first of her two doubles allowing Smitchko to blaze her way home.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles put the game on ice, plating four runs to end the contest by the 10-run rule.

Things don’t get easier for Bald Eagle Area as it plays Philipsburg-Osceola on Tuesday and then Bellefonte on Thursday.

Leading the offense were Hockenberry went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, Smitchko 2-for-4 RBI and two runs, Peters 2-for-3, 3RBIs, Meghan King 2-for-3 RBI, run and Autumn Tobias 2-for-3 RBI.
