Lady Trojans outslug McConnellsburg

By BRIAN CARSON

MOUNT UNION – McKenna Shields had two home runs and four RBIs to lead Mount Union to the 13-7 slugfest win over McConnellsburg in non-league softball action Monday afternoon.
The Trojans (10-3) pounded out 16 hits with Smith going 3-for-4. Kadyn Crisswell had three hits and two RBIs from her leadoff spot, while Karrigan Woodward had two hits with two RBIs. Payton Low was 3-for-3 with an RBI and Destinie Myers had two hits to aid the Mount Union cause.
“We hit pretty well today. Shields came out and she almost put three out. One went to the fence but didn’t quite get out,”Mount Union coach Matt Fiscus said. “She was seeing the ball well. We had several people rope the ball for doubles. Hopefully, we can continue to hit like this. We have a long two weeks with four games this week and next.”
Mount Union opened up a 4-0 lead with a run in the first and three in the second. Crisswell led off the first with a double and scored on a double to left by McKenzie Boozel. Shields led off the second with a solo shot to left, Myers followed with a single up the middle and later plated on a Low RBI double to left. Low would later score on an error.
The Spartans got on the board with a run in the third when Kailey Swope walked, stole second and third, and came home on a sacrifice fly to center.
The Trojans answered with six runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 10-1 lead. Morgan Brumbaugh had an RBI double and later scored on an error. Kaitlin Arnold laid down a bunt single and Shields blasted a two-run jack to straightaway center. Myers and Low connected on back-to-back base hits and Criswell brought them home with a knock to right.
“It puts us in the right from of mind to start the week. What’s nice about us is we hit the ball up and down the lineup. We don’t just hit at the top and hope to get back around,” Fiscus said. “Low in the nine spot had three hits for us today. We needed to build on today for tomorrow because West Branch is going to be tough. We need to come prepared. The girls are in a good place right now. They are talking a lot of good swings on the ball, even when we got out.”
McConnellsburg battled back with a run in the fifth and four in the sixth to tighten it to 11-6. The Spartans got an RBI single from Destiny Hall in the fifth and two RBIs each from Kylie Garland and Samantha Hensley in the sixth.
Mount Union added two more runs in the sixth on a two-run single to left from Woodward that plated Low and Crisswell.
Woodard picked up the win despite allowing seven runs, only two earned, on nine hits. The Trojan sophomore struck out three and walked five. Karah Stiffler took the loss for McConnellsburg.
“You can’t walk people, especially early in the inning. You get somebody on without any outs and you put yourself in a bad position,” Fiscus said. “We’re working through a lot of things. We hit enough to overcome it, but when you go against playoff-caliber teams we’re going to have to get that taken care of.”
Mount Union hosts West Branch tomorrow.
