MC’s Smith awarded parade in his honor; earns state title nod

LEWISTOWN – To the victors go the spoils.

The Mifflin County Huskies will be adding another photo to its Wall of Fame!

Sunday, Mifflin County indoor track runner Carter Smith made history as he became the first State Champion for the Huskies on the indoor circuit. Smith, who is just a sophomore, took top honors in the 800-meter run posting a winning time of 1:52.82.

“We are so (the entire coaching staff) incredibly proud of what Carter has accomplished,” said Mifflin County Indoor coach Tamara Sechler. “He came out as a freshman and ran his first 800 last year and ran a 2:12. One year later he took off 20 seconds and became a state champion. We just couldn’t be more proud of his work ethic and everything he put in to getting himself to this place.”

Carter was very humble when taking the microphone when his turn to deliver his comments.

“I’d like to thank everyone who came out here today,” said Smith. “I really don’t know what to say.”

When asked how it felt to be a state champion. Smith reply was spirited and immediate.

“It feels pretty good,” said Smith. “

The time was also a school record. It was also good enough to be the 11th fastest time in the nation.

For winning the State Championships, Smith was awarded a specially designed watch to add to the hardware.

He was the lone representative for MIfflin County in the PTFCA Indoor High School Track & Field State Championships.

Smith was honored by his school, family, friends and fellow classmates with a parade through downtown Lewistown and a ceremony at the high school. Afterwards they had refreshments to add to the celebration.

Smith will continue his indoor season with a trip to as he is set to run in the 2024 New Balance Nationals Indoor Track & Field Championships in Boston, Mass.

From there, Smith will be looking to continue his success in outdoor track and field season which is only weeks away from kicking off.

With two more years, the event might become an annual one.
