SC Field Hockey traveled to Mechanicsburg to play Cumberland Valley for their first away game of the season. From the beginning of the game, both teams battled for possession of the ball, but early in the first quarter, CV’s Mia Boardman had a breakaway and scored at the 13:31 mark. CV seemed to have speed on their side, but State College battled back and in the second quarter and with 6:51 on the clock, Lizzie Paterno charged into the circle and shot the ball into the cage tying it up 1-1. After the half, State College moved the ball more effectively both on offense and defense, but Cumberland Valley stepped up their defense as well and in the third quarter, with 13:31 remaining, CV’s Ami Mattingly, with an assist from Capris Spriggs, scored to put CV ahead 2-1. It was an uphill climb for State College and they seemed to be gaining momentum, but as time ran out in the third quarter, CV was awarded a penalty corner and K.K. Sauve, with an assist from Ami Mattingly, was able to convert after time had expired putting CV up 3-1. State College fought to control possession of the ball but didn’t score again until, with 8:12 remaining in the fourth quarter, SC moved the ball into the circle and after a scramble between players in front of the cage, Lizzie Paterno got a shot off, scoring her second goal of the game and closing CV’s lead to one. State College continued playing with intensity and grit and had several opportunities including several penalty corners near the end of the game, but was unable to score and the game ended SC 2-CV 3 giving SC its first loss and bringing their record to (3-1) for the season.
