State College field hockey team opens season with win

The 2022 season opener saw much offensive action from both North Allegheny (NA) and State College (SC). Midway through the first quarter SC got on the board first when junior Olivia Miller used quick stickwork cutting through the Tiger defense, finding Victoria Castano for the tip-in score. Less than four minutes later, NA’s Mila Drusak broke through the State College backfield finishing with a goal.

In the second quarter, the State College offense began to work their possession game. At the 6:52 mark, Olivia Miller again carved through the NA defense, this time finding senior Maddy Shomo for the score. SC led 2-1 at the half.

Less than two minutes into the second half NA’s speedy Isla Abrams got in behind the SC defense finding the stick of a quick cutting Josie Shomburg who evened the score at 2-2. With the score tied, SC began to dominate the time of possession and keep the ball in the NA zone. A melee ensued in front of NA’s goalie Jordan Ashbaugh, and SC forward Maddy Shomo slammed the ball into the cage for her second goal.

In the fourth quarter SC’s composure with relentless pressure began to wear down the NA defense. On a penalty corner, SC sophomore Lanie Herlocher found Olivia Miller to make the score 4-2. The SC attack wasn’t done. With 3:26 left in the game, sophomore Ella Tambroni passed to the hot handed Maddy Shomo who finished the day with a hat-trick.

Next game State College at Lower Dauphin, Friday September 2. JV 5:30 PM, Varsity 7:00 PM.

In their season opener, State College Junior Varsity came out strong tallying 23 shots on the day and earning 6 penalty corners. Allie Peters, Lanie Herlocher, Catalina Castano and Victoria Castano led the way with 8 different State College players taking chances on goal. State College’s defense led by sophomore goalie, Keira Loviscky held the Tigers to just 3 shots.
