The State College boys’ basketball team held off Mid-Penn foe Mifflin County and took the District 6, AAAAAA Championship
on Saturday afternoon at Mount Aloysius College.

In what was a close contest throughout, SC guard Ty Salazer made the play of the game with a late steal and a breakaway basket that gave his team a five-point lead with under a minute to play. The Lions were then able to close out the 51-44 win.

Luke Torbic led the Lions with 16 points while Reed Melvin scored 14 and Aidan Angus had 9.

The Little Lions will now face the winner of the District 8-10 Playoff next week, at home, in a PIAA seeding game.

The Lady Little Lions did not fare as well as the boys’ team and fell to Altoona in the girls’ District 6, AAAAAA Championship by a score of 61-42.

SC was cold all afternoon and fell behind early and never recovered.

Altoona forged ahead by nine, 14-5, at the end of the first quarter and by 17 at halftime.

State College did put up an 18-point effort in the fourth quarter, but it was too late and Altoona was able to close out the game.

McKenna Whitehurst led SC with 10 points.

The loss ended the Lady Lions’ season with a final record of 16-8.
